Twenty two year old Josh Richards boasts a résumé that many veteran racers would be proud of, yet Richards remains humble and un-phased by his early success including his most recent accomplishment, winning the 2009 World of Outlaws Late Model Championship. Born into a racing family, Josh grew up in the family's chassis shop and started driving the pack vehicle at nearby I-79 Speedway at the age of five. However, unlike many of his peers, Josh did not start his racing career in go-karts or quarter midgets. In 2003, he assumed the wheel of a 700+ horsepower dirt late model at the age of 15, and the rest is history.
Beginning in the prestigious World of Outlaws Late Model Series at age 16 his accomplishments racked up quickly including the WoO LMS Rookie of the Year title in 2005. In 2006, Richards' winning ways continued as he managed the demanding tour schedule of the WoO and successfully completed his senior year of high school with honors. Josh was one of sixteen young racers tapped to participate in the General Motors Driver Development Program, but he already had strong bonds with several of NASCAR's prominent names. NASCAR's two time champion Tony Stewart became a mentor to Josh as well as a teammate when Tony competed in a select dirt schedule. The young driver has also impressed Ken Schrader and Clint Bowyer on dirt and both are still strong supporters of Josh's abilities. Driving for Tony Stewart Racing, Josh has also made three appearances at the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals (2006-2008). In his debut in the ARCA Racing Series he finished third at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds (2007).
The 2007 and 2008 seasons were much the same for Josh Richards, by the age of 20 he had already competed at 115 different tracks in more than 330 events. In 2008, he was atop the leader board for the most WoO LMS victories in a single season (six), finished second in championship points in spite of being the only fulltime tour member under the age of 30, and picked up his second honor as the winning crew chief for Tony Stewart at the Old Spice Prelude to the Dream.
In February 2009 the World of Outlaws Late Model Series Pre-Season Media Poll was released and Josh Richards was voted as the overwhelming favorite to win the 2009 World of Outlaws Late Model Series Championship. Richards fulfilled that prediction and became the youngest World of Outlaws Champion in series history. The 2009 season was filled with victories and accomplishments unprecedented by a driver with only six years of experience. In 2009 Richards entered 70 events, racked up an impressive 15 wins, 38 top-fives, 58 top-10s and 12 fastest qualifier awards.
When Richards won the World of Outlaws Late Model Series opener at the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia (FL) Speedway Park for the third straight year it was clear it was going to be an exciting season for the West Virginia native. Winning a series high eight A-mains in the World of Outlaw Late Model Series he also became the first competitor to earn three consecutive victories in a 24 hour span at East Bay Raceway Park in Florida in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. Other notable victories came at Volusia Speedway in the UMP Dirt Car Series as well as two victories at Appalachian Mountain Speedweeks.
Going into the WoO World Finals at the Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway Richards was just four points shy of the lead behind mentor and 2007 series champion Steve Francis. Beginning that race in 14th position, the Shinnston, West Virginia native would battle to finish in seventh place, five places ahead of leader Francis solidifying his place in history as the 2009 World of Outlaws Champion. Only six years after taking the wheel of a dirt late model car Richards became the youngest driver in Dirt Late Model history to win a national touring-series championship.
In addition to his accomplishments on dirt, in 2009 Richards entered pavement races in both the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and the ARCA Racing Series with Kenny Schrader Racing. In his NASCAR K&N Pro Series East debut Richards finished fourth at Greenville Pickens Speedway.
The 2010 season has started for the Champion in much the same way the 2009 season began. Richards won the WoO LMS season opener at Volusia for the fourth straight year while he also earned a victory at the Southern All Stars Racing Series at Golden Isles Speedway in addition to an early season victory again at Hagerstown Speedway.
